LimmudVan ’14 presenter wins Holocaust literature award

Mazel Tov to Beverley Chalmers, a presenter at LimmudVan’14 who has been awarded the Canadian Jewish Literary Award for Holocaust Literature.

Her book “Birth, Sex and Abuse: Women’s Voices Under Nazi Rule” is described as incorporating women’s history, Holocaust studies, social sciences and medicine in a unique, cutting-edge examination of what women themselves said, thought and did.

““This book has an utterly unique, in-depth focus on all aspects of sexuality and reproduction during the Nazi regime; the author has written the first-ever, comprehensive tome on the treatment of women and infants [in the Nazi era,]” says Prof. Miriam Gillis-Carlebach, director of the Joseph Carlebach Institute at Bar-Ilan University in Israel.

Dr Chalmers at LimmudVan ’14 presented on the manipulation of reproduction and sexuality as a less direct but also abusive method of genocide of the Jews.

Presentations for LimmudVan’16, to be held January 30-31, will be unveiled next month. We received 71 different submissions from 53 presenters. Regrettably we have only one day of sessions and we will be unable to fit in all the good ones.

The lineup will be announced in November and tickets will be on sale from our website shortly afterwards. Check out the Limmud Vancouver website for complete information on the celebration of learning, laughter and culture.
